Maori Powhiri – blessing of the festival site

Today I was lucky enough to take part in the Powhiri for Splore Crew and blessing of the festival site, as well as see the stunning site for the first time. Powhiri is the ritual ceremony of encounter where the Iwi (local tribes) discover whether the visiting party is friend or foe. the event involved whaikorero (speech making), waita (songs) and haka (dance) and ended with us all lining up and pressing noses with the Iwi. It was a very poignant ritual, and now the Splore Festival and the site has the blessing of the two Maori tribes whose ancestors once occupied the site.
